We purchased this item after searching extensively for an exhaust fan that wouldn't cost us an arm and a leg. If you've looked, you know that island range hoods are ridiculously priced! Plus, we needed something that did not need a direct vent, as our ceiling beams were going in the wrong direction and were blocked by a chimney. Our electrician did not have a problem installing this. I had very good and prompt communication with AKDY regarding a couple questions I had. It looks very nice above my stove! The only "complaint" I do have is that the lighting that is on the fan is very dim. Not really enough to use as a lighting source, but just for decoration. I probably would have had additional lighting installed in the ceiling above my work area around the stove if I'd have known that. Not knowing, I thought the additional lighting would be overkill. Oh, well. All in all, a great value.

We too were looking for an island hood that didn't break the bank and found this one on Amazon. This arrived promptly with no complications. We didn't have an electrician come and install this hood. The electrician only provided a new plug source. The hood is made for ceilings that are the standard 8 feet and taller. This made it a challenge in installation because we had to modify the internal brace and outer steel cover too for our kitchen height because we have a drop ceiling. The ventilation tube is plastic (which was a first that the electrician has ever seen for a large appliance usually a metal type). It took two people to install the hood to the inner bracket and SEVERAL screws. The instructions were a bit vague in areas and could use some clarification. After the modification of the inner brace and outer steel cover it took about 1.5 hours to install. Final overall appearance is great although there was a slight bend on outer steel cover. My only complaint was the strength of lights. There LED and have poor illumination that would not be suitable for cooking purposes. I guess most of Akdy hood-lights are like this (from other reviews) so I had the electrician add lights that would shine down from the ceiling directly at the cooking surface. This hood is still worth the trouble (barely) = )

By surfnraven
Since there are only two reviews for this item and these hoods costs so much less than the competition, I figured I'd write a quick review. I've only had it up for about a week or two though so I don't know whether it will last yet, but everything seems to be working so far. I honestly don't know why every other island hood costs almost double this, but I assume the fact that this one came in a box labeled 'Made in China' is a good bit of that cost difference.Anyway, it wasn't too bad to install - main issue was the lack of a level ceiling in this old house and then the rafter than was going through the area we wanted to install it. We had a bit of trouble getting the inner bracket past a certain point, but after measuring it ended up being in the range noted in the instructions so we just left it there. (Note: I have hit my head already as it is kind of low, but I think that is more due to the glass that surrounds the steel portion of the hood. I didn't realize how far out that was going to end up so I'm contemplating removing the glass as it appears to be just screwed on.)The lights are a little dim as noted, but do put enough light on the cook top for us. There are some instructions on replacing them in the small instruction booklet. I don't notice it being overly loud - seems quieter than the old under-the-cabinet recirculating Broan (we vented this one out through the roof).
